How to Teach an Ancient Rape Joke

On the last day of April, the Columbia University student newspaper published an op-ed by four undergraduate students recommending the wide consideration of trigger warnings for humanities education. The primary example cited in the letter was an undergraduate woman and sexual assault survivor who was triggered by a classroom experience with Ovid’sMetamorphoses, in which the professor discussed the language and imagery in the rape stories of Daphne and Persephone without acknowledging the violence of the subject.
