Why such disparities in sentences of convicted rapists?

Studies show that convicted rapists often spend surprisingly short amounts of time behind bars. Why is America light on sex offenders?

Rape is a loaded term. What comes to mind is a vile, indefensible act, and we can’t help but think that the human who committed the heinous offense must also be a depraved soul, one who should be kept away from society.

So why then do some convicted rapists receive 40 years in jail while most others get a far shorter amount? It’s complicated.
